Hat Creator

Are you interested in making hat for the Hats Off To Butte Millinery Fashion Show?

We are looking for at least 30 hats to be made by the community. The new hats will be paired with hats from our community’s historic collection to create a fashion show that spans the time from the founding of the city of Butte through today.

Our rules for submission of new hats to this show:

  • You may decorate an existing hat

  • You may make a hat from scratch

  • You may deconstruct and reconstruct a hat

  • The hat submitted for the show must be your workmanship

  • The hat must be wearable by a human model; normal human head size, not unusually heavy or awkward for a model to present on a runway.

  • Materials permitted for hat construction are cardboard, fiberboard, foam, fabric - includes felt, cotton, velvet, yarn, thread, wire. In the case of mining headgear, no open flames please, if you want the image of the flicker of flames use an LED light.

  • Hats can be sponsored by an organization, the sponsoring organization can be identified on the hatband. Think of this opportunity like a mini parade float.

  • Your hat can be a reproduction of a historic hat using a pattern, your decoration of the hat should be unique to you.

  • Types of hats we are hoping for Art hats, Historic hats, Fashion Hats, Mining Hats, Workers Hats and Caps, we also include crochet and knit hats.

If you have questions about your particular idea for a hat being able to be included, please contact Elizabeth Tritthart at Historic Weaving. These questions are best addressed in person.

Hat submissions require an artist submission form to be filled out when dropping of the hat. Amongst the questions will be: Do you want to offer your hat for sale to help raise funds for the IBRC, and the World Museum of Mining? You are not required to sell your masterpiece to be part of the show.

If you want to make a hat but you lack the skills, fear not, there are 8 workshops planned to help you learn the skills needed to make a beautiful hat. You can attend any or all of them, and still have plenty of time to complete your piece before the October 20th submission deadline. See the workshop schedule here.
